The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that the crescent moon of the month of Shaban, 1439 A.H. was sighted in the southern regions of the United States during the sunset of Monday, April 16th, 2018. Based on the opinion of Sayyid Sistani regarding Multiplicity of Horizons, the first of the month of Shaban, 1439 A.H will be as follows:

Tuesday, April 17, 2018, for all the areas under the horizon visibility curve starting from Philadelphia, passing through Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, all the way to Vancouver (see red and orange shaded areas in graphic below).

Wednesday, April 18, 2018, for the rest of North America.

The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces that Sunday, March 18th, 2018, will be the last day of Jumadi al-Akhirah and that Monday, March 19th, 2018, will be the first day of the month of Rajab, 1439 A.H. for the entire region of North America.

This determination is based on the fact that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Saturday, March 17th, 2018, in any region of North America.

We ask God, the Most High, for success in performing good deeds and hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (p).

Peace be upon you.

The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces that Monday, July 24th, 2017 will be the last day of the month of Shawwal, 1438 A.H. and Tuesday, July 25th, 2017, will be the first day of the month of Dhil Qa’da, 1438 A.H. for the entire region of North America.

This determination is based on the fact that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Sunday, July 23rd, 2017, in any region of North America.

We ask Allah, the Most High, for success in performing good deeds and hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (p)

 Birthday of Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (p) – (148th year A.H.)
30 Dhul al-Qa’dah (Aug. 22)  Martyrdom of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (p) –  (220th year A.H.)

The Moon-Sighting Committee

The Moon-Sighting Committee was established in 2007 by The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America, which annually selects new members to serve on its behalf. It has offered its services to the believers in North America every month since. The current committee was appointed at the Fifteenth Conference of The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America held in Chicago in August 2015.
