Announcement Concerning:

The Crescent Moon of the Month of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1437

To the respected believers in North America,

Peace be upon you.

The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon at sunset on Friday, December 11, in any region of North America. Therefore, Saturday, December 12, will be the last day of Safar and Sunday, December 13, 2015 will be the first day of the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, 1436, for the entire region of North America.

 

     We ask Allah (swt) for success in performing good deeds and hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdī (ajfs).

Important Islamic Events This Month:

 

  •  8th (Dec. 20th)         Martyrdom of Imam Hasan al-Askari (year 260 A.H.)
  • 12th (Dec. 24th)        Arrival of the Prophet Muhammed PBUH&HF to Yathrib city (al-Madina)   marking the start of the Islamic calendar.
  • 17th (Dec. 29th)        Birthday of Prophet Muhammed PBUH&HF (53 B.H.)
  • 17th (Dec. 29th)        Birthday of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq a.s. (Year 38 A.H.)
  • 18th (Dec. 30th)       Establishment of al-Nabawi Masjid (Mosque) in the city of al-Madina on the first Hijri year.

The Moon-Sighting Committee

The Moon-Sighting Committee was established in 2007 by The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America, which annually selects new members to serve on its behalf. It has offered its services to the believers in North America every month since. The current committee was appointed at the Fifteenth Conference of The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America held in Chicago in August 2015.

Safar, 1437

Announcement Concerning:

The Crescent Moon of the Month of Safar, 1437

To the respected believers in North America,

Peace be upon you.

The Crescent Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces that Friday, November 13, 2015 will be the first day of the month of Safar 1437 for the entire region of North America.

This determination was made due to reports of verified sightings of the crescent moon at sunset on Thursday, November 12, in many regions of United States. Thus, Arbaeen, the anniversary of the 40th day of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (as), will be on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.

We ask Allah (swt) to give us victory and success in reaping the maximum benefits this month as we honor the Ahl al-Bayt (as) and we ask Him as well to increase their remembrance among ourselves, our family, and our friends. Finally, we ask Allah (swt) to hasten the Return of our Master, the Awaited Imam (ajfs).

  • 17 Safar (Nov 29):  Martyrdom of Imam Ali bin Musa al-Rida (as), 203 AH
  • 20 Safar (Dec 2):  The anniversary of the 40th day of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (as), 61 AH
  • 28 Safar (Dec 10):  Death of prophet Muhammed (pbuh&hf), 11 AH.

The Crescent Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces that Thursday, October 15, 2015, will be the first day of Muharram 1437 AH for the United States and Canada.

This determination was made based on no verified sightings of the crescent moon at sunset on Tuesday, October 13, in any region of North America. Thus, the last day of Dhul-Hijjah will be Wednesday, October 14.

The Day of Ashura, the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (as), will therefore be on Saturday, October 24, 2015.

Dhul Hijjah, 1436

The Crescent Moon of the Month of Dhul-Hijjah, 1436

To the respected believers in North America,
Peace be upon you.


The Crescent Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Tuesday, the 15th of September 2015, will be the first day of Dhul-Hijjah, 1436 AH for the United States and the southern regions of Canada.

This determination is based on the fact that there were reported sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye during the sunset of Monday, the 14th of September from many locations. Based on that:

  • The Day of ‘Arafa will be Wednesday, September 23, 2015.
  • The Day of Eid al-Adha will be Thursday, September 24, 2015.
We ask Allah (swt) to accept our good deeds, to return all Hajjis to their lands and families safely, and to hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (ajfs).
